How Timberland Used a Smart Vending Machine to Launch a Contest in Milan

Last May, Timberland transformed three iconic Milan venues into the stage of a unique brand activation focused on the legendary Boat Shoe. The initiative combined urban culture, technology and experiential marketing, and Magex was proud to be part of it.

A campaign rooted in the city

The activation involved three renowned Milan hotspots — Fiuri Milano, Il Nemico and Verzeratt — where visitors, simply by ordering a drink or a dish, received a ticket with a QR code. This gave them access to a contest where they could win a pair of Timberland Boat Shoes and other exclusive prizes.

The role of Magex: design meets engagement

At the heart of the activation was our Alaska 6 vending machine, selected for its high capacity, modular structure and urban-friendly design. While the model remained standard, it was custom-wrapped with Timberland branding, turning it into an eye-catching and interactive touchpoint right inside the city’s social scene.

By scanning the QR code, participants landed on a contest landing page — a seamless bridge between physical interaction and digital engagement.

A new frontier in experiential retail

This project showcases how vending machines can be much more than points of sale. They can become marketing tools, brand extenders and experiential hubs—perfect for brands looking to activate their audience in unexpected and engaging ways.
